Event description

The DfE’s Governance Handbook and Competency Framework (2019) clearly define the role of governors as having three Core Functions; the second of these is: “Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils and the effective and efficient performance management of staff.”

The Ofsted Handbook (2019) states that inspectors will explore, at inspection, how governors carry out each of these functions. Indeed, HMI regularly ask governors at inspection how they hold the headteacher to account.

This interactive and recommended session takes up these themes and examines how governors can contribute to improving their school by holding the headteacher and other senior leaders to account. It will include:

  • effectively monitoring and evaluating progress on the key improvement priorities

  • appropriate challenge and support

  • identifying the information needed to monitor progress

  • asking the right questions

  • visiting the school

  • engaging effectively with parents and other stakeholders

  • evidencing accountability to Ofsted

The course will be facilitated by independent governor trainer and consultant, Andrew Dodge, an experienced governor and governing body chair in infant, primary, secondary and special schools

Training objectives

  • To understand how governors effectively and appropriately hold the headteacher to account

  • To identify how the governing body can maximise its accountability
