Event description

This course is in two parts, delivered via Zoom, each lasting 90 minutes. It has been put together and will be led by governor trainer and consultant, Andrew Dodge, a school governor and chair himself, with experience in infant, primary, secondary and special schools, both maintained and academy. 



  • Part 1 Tuesday 30th January 2024 6-7.30pm

  • Part 2 Thursday 1st February 2024 6-7.30pm



  • Have you been asked to consider standing as chair or vice-chair of your governing body or to chair a committee? Is your current chair/vice-chair likely to stand down soon and you suspect you may be approached to take over? Have you considered standing but are not sure what is required or if you have the necessary skills? Are you already a chair and would like to learn new strategies and meet other chairs to share good practice?

    If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” then you should book on this interactive and highly recommended course as it is suitable for all current and aspiring governing body chairs, vice-chairs and committee chairs. The session will refer to the chair’s role in strategic leadership and in ensuring accountability and will offer opportunities to share experiences and good practice and examine, the skills required to chair a meeting effectively. Participants will be provided with online access to a range of useful templates and checklists.


The course covers:


  • The role of the chair & vice-chair - what the chair does and how the work can be delegated including the division of responsibilities between chair, vice-chair and committee chairs

  • Managing relationships with governors – building, knowing and leading the team, inducting new governors, supporting governor development, succession planning

  • Managing the work of the governing body – planning the work, chairing effective meetings, good minuting, dealing with challenging situations

  • Managing relationships with the headteacher – establishing and maintaining an effective, professional relationship, clarifying roles, agreeing mutual expectations

  • Supporting strategic leadership and ensuring accountability – the chair’s role

  • To identify how good chairing contributes to improving the school

  • To share strategies on how to chair more effectively


Suitable for all new and aspiring chairs, vie chairs, committee chairs and those with a lead role in governing boards. Also suitable for those more experienced chairs who wish to check they have a clear understanding of the role and wish to learn/share strategies for effective practice
